What makes Lomi Lomi different

Lomi Lomi is a traditional Hawaiian massage technique. The name itself — lomi lomi — means "to knead, rub or soothe", and that doubled word captures the rhythm of the work: continuous, flowing, never abrupt.

Where Swedish and remedial massage rely on the hands working in short, targeted strokes, Lomi Lomi uses the forearms as the primary tool. A therapist might travel from your foot to your shoulder in a single uninterrupted stroke, then back again — like waves rolling over the body. The pressure is firm but never sharp, the contact almost continuous, and the effect on the nervous system is profound.

Most clients who try Lomi Lomi for the first time describe it the same way: "I've never had a massage like that." The combination of full-body coverage, slow rhythm, and deep but spread-out pressure puts you somewhere between deep relaxation and meditation — a state Western massage modalities rarely reach.

Benefits

What you get from a Lomi Lomi session

Deep, full-body relaxation

Long forearm strokes cover broad areas of the body, calming the nervous system far more than short, segmented techniques.

Improved circulation & lymph flow

Continuous flowing pressure helps move stagnant fluid and oxygenate tissue — you leave feeling lighter, not just looser.

Released chronic muscle tension

Slow, sustained pressure works through layers without forcing — ideal for clients who find deep tissue too sharp.

Better sleep & mood

The rhythmic, wave-like quality of Lomi Lomi shifts the body into parasympathetic rest, easing anxiety and improving sleep quality.

Reduced postural strain

Great for desk workers, drivers, and parents — addresses upper-back, shoulder and hip tension built up over days, not minutes.

A truly different experience

Unlike Swedish or remedial massage, Lomi Lomi feels continuous and meditative — most clients say "I've never had a massage like that".

What to expect

Your first Lomi Lomi session at eWellbeing

  1. Brief intake. A short chat about what you're looking for, any areas to focus on or avoid, and your preferred pressure.
  2. You undress to your comfort level and lie face-down. We use professional draping throughout — only the area being worked is uncovered.
  3. The session begins with warming oils and slow forearm strokes along the back, glutes and legs. Music is generally Hawaiian or ambient.
  4. You'll turn over roughly halfway through, and we work the front of the legs, arms, neck and shoulders the same way.
  5. You take a moment when the session ends — most clients want to lie still for a couple of minutes before getting up. We bring water.

Most clients book 60 or 90 minutes. We recommend 90 minutes for a first Lomi Lomi if your schedule allows — the technique is built around uninterrupted flow and the longer session is where the magic really happens.

FAQ

Common questions

What is Lomi Lomi massage?

Lomi Lomi is a traditional Hawaiian massage technique built around long, flowing forearm strokes that travel the full length of the body. The name means "to knead, rub or soothe" in Hawaiian. Where Swedish or remedial massage uses short, targeted strokes, Lomi Lomi works in continuous waves — calming the nervous system as deeply as it works the muscles.

How is it different from a Swedish or remedial massage?

Swedish massage uses short, segmented strokes with the hands. Remedial massage targets specific muscle groups with firm, focused techniques. Lomi Lomi uses the forearms as the primary tool, with long sweeping strokes that cover multiple muscle groups in a single pass. The result is an experience that feels rhythmic, meditative, and full-body in a way other modalities simply don't.

Will it be too gentle for my stiff back/shoulders?

No — Lomi Lomi can be just as deep as a remedial massage when needed. The pressure comes from the forearm and bodyweight rather than thumbs or knuckles, so it reaches deep tissue without the sharp, pinpointed pain some clients dislike. We always check pressure as we go.

How long is a Lomi Lomi session?

Most clients book 60 or 90 minutes. Lomi Lomi shines with longer sessions because the technique is built around continuous, uninterrupted flow — 60 minutes is the practical minimum, 90 minutes is where most people feel the full effect.

What should I wear / expect?

Undress to your comfort level — most clients keep underwear on. We use professional draping throughout. Expect to be face-down for the first half, face-up for the second, with the therapist working in long uninterrupted strokes from feet to shoulders. Music is generally Hawaiian or ambient.

Is Lomi Lomi safe during pregnancy or with injuries?

For pregnancy massage we have specific positioning and techniques — please mention pregnancy at booking. For acute injuries or recent surgery, talk to us first; in many cases we'd recommend our remedial massage as a better starting point. Lomi Lomi is best suited to general tension, stress, and overall wellbeing rather than rehabilitating a specific injury.

Can I claim Lomi Lomi on private health insurance?

Lomi Lomi itself is generally not covered, but many of our therapists are qualified to deliver it under a remedial massage modality which is claimable on extras cover with most funds. Check with your fund before booking if claiming matters to you.
